Protests Break Out in Dharavi Over Mosque Demolition

Tensions escalated in Mumbai's Dharavi as a protest erupted over the planned demolition of the Subhania Mosque (also known as the Mehboob-e-Subani Mosque). The mosque, located on 90 Feet Road, has been at the center of a heated dispute between the local Muslim community and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The BMC declared the mosque unauthorized and issued a formal demolition notice, sparking unrest among locals who argue that the mosque has stood for over 25 years.

On Saturday, the BMC sent a team to carry out the demolition, leading to large-scale protests. Protesters blocked roads, disrupting traffic, and voiced their opposition to the demolition. Despite police efforts to maintain law and order, tensions heightened when some protesters pelted stones at a BMC vehicle, damaging it. Police officers urged protesters to clear the streets, with some leaving the road, though many remained seated in front of the mosque, demanding that it not be demolished.

Community Leaders Engage in Talks with BMC

As the protests intensified, a meeting was arranged between community leaders, mosque trustees, and BMC officials at the Dharavi Police Station. Senior police personnel were also present to mediate the discussions. During the meeting, the trustees of the mosque submitted a letter promising to clear encroachments around the mosque within four to five days. The BMC reportedly accepted this request, granting a temporary reprieve from immediate demolition.

Political Intervention and Response

The issue has drawn the attention of political figures. Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad met with Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to convey the concerns of the local community. Gaikwad took to social media to share that her meeting with the Chief Minister was positive, with Shinde assuring her that he would communicate with the concerned authorities to consider halting the demolition process. The situation remains tense, but for now, the mosque has avoided immediate demolition as the community works to resolve the encroachment issue.

The protests in Dharavi highlight the deep-rooted tensions that can arise over issues of religious structures and urban development.
